Marc Fitoussi disse em entrevistas que queria fazer um filme sobre a adolescência com uma abordagem um pouco diferente. Isto é, em um contexto que não fosse necessariamente esperado como uma faculdade ou acampamento de verão onde as crianças se reúnem. Daí lhe veio a ideia de mostrar um mergulho do adolescente no mundo adulto, ou seja, em uma empresa.
O diretor do filme já tinha abordado uma relação de mãe e filha em seu filme Copacabana (2010). Apesar da coincidência de temas, Fitoussi afima que a repetição não foi proposital e que a história poderia ter ocorrido entre um pai e um filho.
