Como o título sugere, o filme conta a história da família Meyerowitz, onde o patriarca Harold Meyerowitz (Dustin Hoffman), é casado atualmente com Maureen, seu quarto casamento. Como resultado das relações anteriores é pai de Matthew (Ben Stiller), Danny (Adam Sandler) e Jean (Elizabeth Marvel). Harold é escultor e professor aposentado e extremamente vaidoso, porém tem uma carreira não tão bem-sucedida como desejaria. A relação entre eles e os filhos também não é tão saudável, Harold tem Matthew como seu filho favorito e não esconde essa preferência dos demais, porém, é extremamente decepcionado por nenhum deles ter enveredado pelo rumo das artes como ele, e deposita sua esperança na neta Eliza, filha de Danny, que estuda Cinema. Matthew é um executivo, Danny era músico, porém dedicou-se a cuidar da filha e abandonou a carreira, e Jean é a mais exótica dos três.

Noah Baumbach é o responsável pelo roteiro e direção do filme e conta-nos a história dessa família com um olhar muito especial. Definitivamente, os Meyerowitz não é a família perfeita, justamente porque essa não existe. Várias lacunas foram deixadas no papel de Harold como pai, o que deixaram os filhos sem muitas referências de qual seria a maneira correta de educar os seus. Algumas feridas também foram feitas na vida dos irmãos, seja pela preferência pelo filho mais novo, seja pela rejeição das carreiras que eles decidiram seguir, ou seja pela proteção de pai que era esperada e não teve.

O roteiro é em sua essência um drama, mas foram colocados alguns elementos cômicos que rirmos sem ser de forma forçada. A madrasta Maureen (Emma Thompson), em seu estilo good vibes que parece não se importar muito com tudo o que está acontecendo. Os filmes trashs feitos por Eliza (Grace Van Patten) com cenas de sexo grotescas com direito a aparição do Sr. Raposo. E o amor repentino dos irmãos pela enfermeira Pam, a única que parecia estar realmente interessada pelo estado de saúde do pai.

O elenco tem uma sinergia incrível, e trazem toda carga de drama que o texto propõe sejam em cenas isoladas ou quando estão juntos.
